To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade(遮蔽)against the sun.

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.

Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have b ecome much lighter in weight. It wasn"t until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English, or do you have to use your first languages? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scient ists have discovered that it is not true.

People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people think begin counting with their first fingers, which they extend or stick out. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb(拇指)to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.

Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. A group of scientists studied aboriginal(土著的)people in Aust ralia. These people don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have word for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers.

In a similar study, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered that people of the Piraha tribe (部落) in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three.”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees,” “more trees,” or “many trees.” Professor Edward Gibson said that mist people believe that everyone knows how to count, “but here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but isn’t not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.”

Although all humans are able to understand quantities(数量),not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting. Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too.

( )61. The writer begins with the four que stions in order to______.

A. They have only a few words for numbers

B. They have hand movements to stand for numbers

C. They can only count to five on their fingers

D. They can understand different ideas about numbers

A. people all over the world know how to count

These tiny plants and animals are called microbes. The word microbe is made from two other words:micro, meaning small, and bios, meaning life. So,microbe means small life.

People did not know microbes had existed(存在) long. They were too small for them to see.But people did see many changes in their world﹣important changes. And they did not know what caused them. They saw food that they kept too long change color and begin to smell bad. They saw cuts and wounds grow red and painful and become worse. They saw old plants and leaves and trees crumble apart on the forest floor and disappear into the soil.Such changes were a natural part of the world, but people did not understand them. They did not know these changes were evidence(证据) of tiny plants and animals growing all around them.

I used to think that life in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was filled with never-changing styles. I hated that everyone seemed to know everything about everyon e else. Everyone seemed to enjoy talking about other people and their lives. I also didn’t like the fact that people seemed very close-minded. I felt trapped. I felt like I was missing . It seemed to me that city life would be the opposite.

Then I took my first trip to New York City. I couldn’t wait to experience the city. However, when I arrived in the Big Apple, it wasn’t at all what I had imagined. I knew it was home to thousands of people, but I hadn’t had the least expectation to see so many people on the street at one time. All the streets were filled with people. I also felt a little surprised to see that everyone was in a hurry and everything moved at such a fast pace(步伐). When I took the su bway for the first time, I said hello to the middle-aged woman next to me. She looked at me with dislike and didn’t say a word.

After just one day, I realized how important my small town is to me. Now I miss the familiar faces I see every day. I like the feeling of safety and belonging m y town offers. Jim Thorpe gives me a sense of community and togetherness that the city doesn’t provide. I realize just how much a simple hello does for a stranger — it really can make your day a little better.

My big trip showed me that my small town really has its own values in me that I didn’t even know I had. I never would have known what a big place my town holds in my heart if I had not taken that trip to New York City.

When US student Olivia Priedeman, 17, woke up one morning, she thought she had had a dream ab out making plans with a friend.

But it wasn"t a dream. Her phone showed that during the night, Priedeman had read a text message from her friend. She did it while she was fast asleep.

Reading and sending text messages while asleep called─ “sleep texting”─ is an unusual sleep behaviour, similar to sleep walking. It"s also a growing problem among doctors: young people can’ t live without their cell phones.

One in three teenagers sends more than 100 text messages a day, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. And at least four out of five teenagers said they sleep with their phone on or near their bed.

Elizabeth Dowdell, a professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, has studied sleep texting. She said that having a phone nearby all night is a big part of the problem.

Andrew Stiehm, a sleep medicine researcher with Allina Health in Minnesota, agrees. It"s possible for the part of the brain that controls skills to wake up, while the part of the brain that controls memory and judgment(判断) may be still asleep. That"s why some people can perform basic movements-such as walking, talking, texting or even driving while they"re sleeping. Some of Dowdell"s students said that they"re disturbed by their nighttime texting behaviour. But because sleep texting is unconscious, it"s a difficult habit to break. Dowdell said she knows of some students who wear socks on their hands to keep themselves from texting.

Marjorie Hogan, a doctor at Hennepin County Medical Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, suggests keeping all electronic products outside the bedroom.

If we agree that education is used to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we should teach children something really useful. Here is what our school should teach.

Politeness is a mark of civilization(文明).The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be achieved by a smile and good manners. Like it or not,our adults work hard for money, but we don"t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.

We"re likely to accept something we are told, but that"s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking.

Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food, they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happ ens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.

All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties. We should understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to communicate with the people around us.

In a word, our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.“

What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.

The tree house

Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house”. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home, The “root” (根)of the house is deep under the ground. it uses the soil(土壤)to control the home’s temperature.

The lizard house

Like a lizard(蜥蜴), changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.

Meals at home

This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture(建筑风格)It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.

Learning from the past

Looking to the future isn’t the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques(古老的技术)can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney(烟囱)can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out of the chimney.

51. What is the best title(标题)of the passage?
