It is not unusual at all for teens to answer their parents with one work answers. “Where are you going?” “Places.” “When will you be back?” “Sometime.” “Who will you be with?” “People.”
That means that the days of your children bounding in the front door with the details of their day are over. They are breaking away from you so that they’ll be able to stand on their own as a young adult.
Some parents feel sad about this loss of their children’s closeness. Of course you miss those conversations and friendly talks. Once your children move out after high school and establish themselves confidently as a young adult, they’ll come back for easy conversations and even ask for advice. But in order to determine who they are right now they need to separate from you.
Your job, however, is to keep them safe——and that requires knowing there they are and who they are with. Let them know clearly that it’s not because you want to dominate their life and control them; it’s because it’s a safety issue for family members to keep track of one another.
When they’re home and sit down to eat a meal, sit down with them. You need to open up to them about your life. Tell them of an interesting incident at the office, let them in on a bit of family gossip(闲谈), discuss a piece of news with them. They are glad that you see them as old enough to be in on a few experiences of your life. By letting a teen in on your life, they just may let you in of theirs

When I was born, my parents immediately noticed something wrong. My feet were deformed (畸形的), pointing inward and curling under. I wore casts (石膏) and foot braces (支架) in my first two years to correct the problem. Yet I learned to balance and walk in casts. Soon after the last set of casts came off,Mom enrolled me in dance classes as therapy for my feet. I, however, quickly decided to try something else. Not far from my house was an ice rink (溜冰场) in the mall. There, local skaters would perform ice shows. I wanted to try skating.
I started taking group skating lessons. Performing on ice came naturally. For me,skating has never been about beating others. It’s been about being my personal best. I progressed through various levels rapidly and gave my first ice performance at age seven. Soon I started winning local and regional competitions. That’s because being on the ice has always been the one place I can truly express my emotions. The ice is like home.
I began seriously training when I was nine years old. After graduating from girls’ high school,I moved to Canada. Saying goodbye to my family and friends made me homesick, but I knew deep down that I had to leave and train full-time to give my dreams a chance at reality.
I went to compete in the Olympic Games in 1992.I was the first of the final six skaters on the ice. My long performance started well, but I slipped while landing one of my easiest triple jumps, and my hand touched the ice. I didn’t want to make two mistakes in a row,so next I did a jump with just two spins to play it safe. As I neared the end,I had one more jump. I landed it perfectly.
When medals were awarded,I found myself on the top step, the gold hanging around my neck and America’s national anthem playing. Words can’t describe the overwhelming mixture of emotions I felt.

The USA, New York—Whales and dolphins are facing increasing threats from climate change, according to a new report published by WWF and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).
The report "Whales in hot water?" draws attention to the growing impacts of climate change on whales. They range from changes in sea temperature and the freshening of the seawater because of the melting of ice and increased rainfalls, to a sea level rise, loss of icy polar habitats and the decline of krill populations in key areas.Krill, a tiny shrimp that is dependent on sea ice, is the main source of food for many of the great whales.
The speeding up of climate change adds greatly to trouble from other human activities, such as chemical and noise pollution, which kills some 1000 whales every day.
"Whales and dolphins have an ability to adapt to their changing environment," said Mark Simmonds, International Director of Science at WDCS."But the climate is now changing at such a fast pace that it is unclear to what extent whales and dolphins will be able to adjust."
Climate change impacts are currently greatest in the Arctic and the Antarctic.According to the report, cetaceans that rely on polar, icy waters for their home and food resources are likely to be greatly affected by the reduction of sea ice cover.
WDCS and WWF are urging governments to cut global production of C02 by at least 50 percent by the middle of this century. The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change showed it was possible to stop global warming if the worlds emissions start to decline before 2015.

[1]One thing Britain is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK would be complete without a visit to one of the thousands of pubs across the country.
[2] Pubs play an important part in the social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social classes mix to talk, do business, or just spend a couple of quiet hours before heading home in the evening.
[3] There are many different types of beer available in pubs. Traditional British beer is called bitter, or ale, and is usually served at room temperature. As a result, the British are famous for their ‘warm beer’ ! If you prefer a cold beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow in color whereas bitter is usually a darker brown. All beers are served as pints (500ml) or haves (250ml). To order, you need to ask for a pint or half, and then name the beer. So, you could say “           ”.
[4]Wine, red or white, is normally available in all pubs, as are spirits such as whisky, gin or vodka.
[5]It is not, however, necessary to drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic drinks are called soft drinks. You can have juice, lemonade or cola, among others.
[6]If you visit a pub in a group, it is important to pay for your ‘round’. This means that you buy a drink for everyone in your group.  Not buying your round is a big social mistake! Remember that you need to order and pay for your drinks at the bar.
[7]So, follow these tips if you want to get the most out of visiting a pub, and, “cheers!”

M : I think I was very lucky to get that job. Now we are able to live in a little village.
W : Ah, but it won’t be a little village forever. This is a developing area. There will be a lot more people here in about five years’ time.
M : Yes, but there won’t be any factories. Just two or three office buildings, and they will be far behind that woodland over there.
W : How did you sleep last night, by the way?
M : I didn’t sleep too well. I couldn’t get used to the silence. The only noise I heard last night was a bird at about two o’clock in the morning.
M : well, the silence was wonderful for me.

W: They had a meal in their hotel?
M: No, what they did was go to a restaurant.Anyway, they could t sped Chinese or English well, so they had to use sign language to order their meal Well, this seemed to work all right. The waiter nodded and smiled and started to go to the kitchen.
W: He understood them.
M: Oh, I forgot to mention they had their pet dog, Rosa, with them and Mary reminded her husband that Rosa was hungry. They called the waiter back and they pointed at the dog, Rosa, and made eating gestures. The waiter didn t seem to understand and looked puzzled. But in the end he smiled and nodded, and picked up the dog and took it into the kitchen.Paul and Mary were satisfied and chatted about their holiday experiences until their food was ready. After about an hour the waiter returned with their main course on a silver dish covered with a large silver lid.Youll never believe this, but it really happened. When they lifted the silver lid they found their dog inside.
W: Did they eat their meal?
M: No.of course not. What happened was that they both suffered a mild nervous breakdown and took the next plane back to Paris.
W: And thats a true story? I find it very unlikely to have happened.
M: It s perfectly true.Really!
