EDGEWOOD—Every morning at Dixie Heights High School, customers pour into a special experiment: the district’s first coffee shop run mostly by students with special learning needs.
Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.
By closing time at 9.20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks.
“Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good," Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher.
The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school.
They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.
Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia.
Not that it was easy. Chevaliers first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content?
Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition (营养) guidelines.
The whole school has joined in to help.
Teachers agreed to give up their lounge (休息室) in the mornings. Art students painted the name of the shop on the wall. Business students designed the paychecks. The basketball team helped pay for cups.

Love, success, happiness, family and freedom—how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life.
Question: Could you introduce yourself first?
Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I’m a web designer.
Q: What are your great memories?
A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories.
Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you?
A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent.
Q: What changes would you like to make in your life?
A: If I could change something in my life, I’d change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn’t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe.
Q: How do you get along with your parents?
A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I’ve got. That’s our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters(过滤) out your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed through sight, hearing and touch.

A. he was free from worry
B. he liked living in the countryside

D. he often spent holidays with his family

A. By chatting on the Internet.            B. By calling them sometimes.

A 69-year-old grandmother with no teeth of her own has eventually won a long legal battle to stop a Scottish regional council(政务委员会)adding fluoride(氟化物)chemical to the public water supply.
In a case which has already cost the taxpayer £1,000,000, the judge ruled that it was beyond the powers of the local authority to add the chemical to the water in order to reduce tooth decay.
At her home last night Mrs. Catherine added fluoride to public drinking water made it into some kinds of dirty soup. “Where would it stop?” She asked. “They might come up with the idea of putting drugs into the water to keep the unemployed quiet.” It was a horrible poison, she said, that could have caused all kinds of diseases, including cancer.
The judge, however, concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that the inclusion of fluoride in the water supply would have had a negative effect on public health. Although the chemical might serve as an efficient and convenient means of achieving a beneficial effect on the dental health of consumers generally, he said, and its use was greatly favored by the dental profession, he could also understand why some members of the public, Mrs. McColl in particular, might be passionately opposed to the action of the Water Authority in assuming the right to improve public well-being without consulting in the public in the first case. The Authority’s legal duty to provide “wholesome” water for public consumption which was both safe and pleasant to drink ,did not, he said, extend to their right to safeguard public health by chemical means.
53. Mrs. McColll felt so strongly about the fluoride issue that she eventually          .
A. took the local council to court
B. had a physical fight with the judge
C. urged the authority to apologize
D. spent much money removing the chemical
54. According to what the judge said in the passage, adding fluoride to the water      .
A. wasn’t proved to be harmful
B. was the duty of the local authority
C. was strongly poised by dentists
D. was surely beneficial to the public
55. The word “wholesome” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by the word “      .”
A. clear   B. poisonous  C. healthy   D. recycled
56. From the passage we learn that people like Mrs. McCall are more concerned about_______.
A. the improvement of their personal health
B. the problem of unemployment in their community
C. the chemicals to be used for the improvement of water quality
D. their right to be informed of the authorities’ decisions

Monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶) are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada. These large orange and black insects brighten parks and gardens as they fly lightly among the flowers. What makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate all the way to California or Mexico and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.
Every year in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first from the Louisiana-Mississippi area, then fly across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. Once in Mexico, they settle themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forest filled with fir trees. Each place provides a winter home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so many that they often cover entire trees. When spring comes, they begin their long journey to the north.
The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer is not the average monarch lives about nine months. So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then die. The eggs of that generation may be found in Kentucky;the eggs of next generation may end up in Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth, will make their way back to Mexico and restart the journey.
Scientists learn about monarchs’ migration by catching and making marks on the insects. By reaching a monarch with such a mark and noticing where it came from, the next scientist can get to know things like the butterfly’s age and its routing.
57. One of the places where monarchs spend the winter is _________.
A. the Gulf of Mexico      B. an area in Mississippi
C. a forest in Mexico      D. a plain in Texas

A. Every year in the early summer monarchs begin their journey to the south.
B. Not every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year.
C. Monarch butterflies are the only insect that migrates.
D. Monarch butterflies begin their long journey north in spring
59. The routing of monarchs’ migration can be learned ________.
A. by examining the marks made on them
B. by collecting their eggs in the mountains
C. by comparing their different ages
D. by counting the dead ones in the forest
60. What is the subject discussed in the passage?
A. Migration of monarchs.    B. Scientists’ interest in monarchs.
C. Winter home of monarchs.    D. Life and death of monarchs.

  DBABC
It’s the second time that…
被强调的是方式状语“by making great efforts”。

英语中用could,might表示询问或征求意见时,肯定性应答要用can或may来代替could或might,而may或might征求意见的问句否定应答时要用mustn’t,故本题选D。
have a nice time祝你玩的高兴;pardon me原谅我;that’s great那太好了;you are right你说的对。

从第二段中“is the first consumer product to help you take control of your sleep”可知,Zoe是第一个能够帮助控制睡眠的消费产品。所以选B。
从“What you do with that information is what makes Zeo so remarkable”可知接下来的“Take control of your sleep”一节讲述的是Zoe的特别之处。
从文章黑体的部分Try Zeo risk free , and enjoy free shipping和FREE SHIPPING可知答案。

My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories可知,Misbah喜爱大自然。
I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn’t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe可知,作者向往和平自由的生活。故选C。
My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters out your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed through sight, hearing and touch可知,Misbah讨厌在电话里与父母联系,因为它只剩下了声音,而Misbah想要的是与父母面对面的交流。
从文章第一段中has eventually won a long legal battle以及下文的case,judge等可以知道,Mrs.
从文章第四段中concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that the inclusion of fluoride in the water supply would have had a negative effect on public health可知“没有证据表明添加佛化物会对公众的健康产生负面影响”,所以选A。
从文章最后一段中“might be passionately opposed to the action of the Water Authority in assuming the right to improve public well-being without consulting in the public in the first case”可以知道“苏格兰人很关注他们的知情权”。故选D。
57. C 由第二段中they settle themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forest filled with fir trees 可知答案。
Every year in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south可知答案。

Dear Peter,
I remember you told me you were interested in teaching in China. Our school now is looking for a native-speaking foreign teacher to teach some courses to senior high students. If you come, you can choose three of the following four courses: Speaking, Writing, Britain Today and America Today, and teach 12 hours a week. The students who are going to take these courses have at least three years of English learning experiences. Besides teaching, you will also work as an advisor to our students’ English club or our school’s English newspaper.
Please let me know if you are interested in and if you have any other questions. I’d be more happy to help.
Best,
Li Hua
